Add some soap to aid cleaning especially if you use an oil or greasy patch lubricant. There is a screw in the side of the drum that can be removed to do the flash channel cleaning suggested by @tenngun. I'm not going to improve on the rest of tenngun's suggestions.Similarily, 1860s are .44s. The smaller sized, but similar looking 1861 is a .36. IMO, .44s are ungainly and overly heavy. My gun liked 70 grs.3f goex,.440 rb,.015 pillow ticking,and crisco for lube.It shot 1-1/4" groups @ 100 yds. from sand bag rest. Hunting load was 90 grs.goex w/Lee minie bullet.They shoot most accuretly if the clearance is .003 or less. That's a pretty snug fit and can be pretty hard to load in a fouled bore. The original Minie' bullet to bore fit could be all over the map and it was usually rather loose so accuracy suffered and for the most part the military didn't care.Much more than a modern firearm that has had 200 rounds through it. Use lubes like olive oil or crisco or whatever you like best while you're shooting to keep the fouling soft enough to re-load. Even the small amount of wax in my paper fiber wads helps a lot to keep the fouling soft.Kevin Houlihan said: There's a ton of room for the rear lock bolt. 54 Cal. You're right in saying that you will have to experiment with your gun to find out for sure. Most of my .54's do fine for deer with .530 roundball in .015 patch over 80 grains of 3f Swiss.
